The Veterans Service Commission

The Veterans Service Commission was established in 1886 by the Ohio Legislature to assist veterans and their families in time of need. Today, the Putnam County Veterans Service Commission provides financial assistance, referrals, information and aid in obtaining Department of Veterans Affairs benefits.

There are many benefits and services available to veterans and their families. However, these benefits are often overlooked or underutilized by those eligible to take advantage of them. The Putnam County Veterans Service Commission exists to provide information and referrals so that veterans and their families can obtain all the benefits they are entitled to receive.

What is the Veterans Service Commission?

The Veterans Service Commission is a county agency dedicated to aiding veterans in times of need. There are three services the agency provides:

  1. Emergency financial assistance to eligible veterans and family members who have demonstrated a need
  2. Financial assistance for transportation to VA Medical Centers for scheduled appointments
  3. Assistance when dealing with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The Veterans Service Officer represents and assists veterans, spouses, dependent children, surviving widows, and parents of deceased veterans entitled to Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC), when they apply to the VA for benefits

Ohio is the only state that provides such comprehensive support and services to its veterans. Each of the 88 counties in Ohio has a board of five appointed commissioners who administer the program for their respective county.
